They come in a range of colours, vary in size and come from arguably the food group with the best name – Legumes! Get past jokes about flatulence and you discover an important fact; beans are also a nutritious Powerhouse! There is no surprise that countries with the longest living populations have beans as a staple food. So why are they great? Let’s discuss…



Why are they considered a Powerhouse? Have a look at the facts:

  • Legumes have been shown to significantly lower risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes
  • Beans contain important micro and macro nutrients including protein, iron, zinc, folate, fibre and potassium
  • In 2007 the American Institute for Cancer Research conducted one of the most comprehensive analysis on diet and cancer, in their final report they encouraged beans to be eaten with every meal
